Sound Like Your Situation?

Here are some common reasons Cincinnati homeowners call us for stump removal

Stumps in Your Yard

You have one or more tree stumps in your lawn that are in the way of mowing and making your yard look rough.

Post-Tree Removal Cleanup

A tree service took down your trees but left the stumps — you need them ground down or pulled out.

Building Over a Stump Location

You're pouring a patio, building a shed, or doing construction where a stump is — it needs to be fully extracted.

Termite or Pest Concern

Old stumps attract termites and carpenter ants — removing them eliminates a pest risk near your home.

Stump Removal in Cincinnati

That tree's been gone for a while but the stump is still there — sitting in the middle of your yard, getting in the way of mowing, and slowly becoming a termite hotel. Or maybe you just had trees taken down and the tree service left the stumps. Either way, stumps don't remove themselves, and the two options are grinding or full extraction. We do both.

Stump grinding is the more common approach. We use a skid steer-mounted stump grinder that chews the stump down 6–12 inches below grade, turning it into a pile of wood chips. The root system stays in the ground and decomposes naturally over several years. Grinding is faster, cheaper, and less disruptive to the surrounding lawn than full extraction. For most homeowners who just want the stump gone so they can mow over the spot, grinding is the right choice.

Full root ball extraction is the heavier option — we use our excavator to pull the entire stump and root ball out of the ground. This leaves a bigger hole that needs to be backfilled, but it removes everything. Full extraction is the right call when you're doing construction over the stump location (pouring concrete, building a structure), when the stump is from a species that sends up aggressive suckers from the root system, or when you just want everything gone completely.

Multiple stumps are common — especially after land clearing or storm damage. We price multiple stumps per-stump with volume discounts. If you have a dozen stumps from a recent clearing job, we'll handle them all in one visit. Our skid steer-mounted grinder moves between stumps quickly without tearing up the lawn the way a trailer-mounted grinder being dragged across the yard does.

Stump size matters for pricing and approach. Small stumps under 12 inches grind in minutes. Large hardwood stumps — 24 inches and up — take longer and produce significantly more chips. Species matters too: soft maples and pines grind fast; old oaks and hickories are dense and take more time. We quote based on what's actually there, not a one-size-fits-all price.

After grinding, we typically leave the wood chips in the hole and mound them slightly above grade to account for settling. You can seed over the chips or rake them out and bring in topsoil — your choice. For full extraction, we backfill the hole with clean fill, compact it, and grade it level with the surrounding ground.

How we approach every stump removal project

01

Assessment

We count stumps, measure sizes, identify species, and determine whether grinding or extraction is appropriate.

02

Grinding or Extraction

We grind stumps below grade with our skid steer attachment, or extract root balls with our excavator.

03

Chip/Hole Management

We manage wood chips from grinding or backfill holes from extraction.

04

Cleanup

We grade any disturbed areas and leave the site clean and mow-ready.

"Had eight stumps from trees we took down last year. They ground all eight in about three hours. No torn-up lawn, no ruts from dragging equipment around. Way better than the trailer-mounted grinder we used last time at our old house."

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about our stump removal services

Grinding chews the stump 6–12 inches below grade and leaves the root system to decompose naturally underground. Full removal extracts the entire stump and root ball, leaving a larger hole that gets backfilled. Grinding is faster, cheaper, and less disruptive. Full removal is for situations where you're building over the location or need everything gone.
Most stumps cost $150–$500 to grind depending on size, species, and accessibility. Large hardwood stumps (24 inches+) are on the higher end. We offer volume discounts for multiple stumps — if you have several, the per-stump price drops. We quote after seeing the stumps.
After grinding, most tree species will not regrow from the remaining roots. A few aggressive species (like silver maples and willows) may send up suckers from the root system for a season or two — these can be mowed over and will eventually stop. Full extraction eliminates any regrowth possibility.
After grinding, we leave the chips in and around the hole. Most homeowners let them settle, add topsoil over them, and seed. You can also rake them out for use as mulch elsewhere in your yard. We can haul chips away for an additional charge if you prefer.
Our skid steer-mounted grinder can access most residential areas, including through standard gates. For stumps in very tight spaces next to buildings or fences, we assess accessibility during the site visit and let you know what's possible.
